Companies with trading shares are required to appoint a registrar whose role is to update the shareholders register when security trade settles in the market.

It is also the role of the registrar to reconcile the register and allocate dividends, effect splits, rights and other corporate actions, to shareholders holding equities at the book closure-date of that entitlement.
